3 Days in Shanghai: A Journey of Ancient and Modern Times

3 Days in Shanghai: A Journey of Ancient and Modern Times

History and Culture

Shanghai is China's largest city and one of the world's most dynamic and modern international metropolises. Located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, Shanghai is not only China's economic, financial, trade and shipping center, but also a model of the integration of historical culture and modern civilization.
Shanghai's history can be traced back to the Neolithic Age 5,000 years ago, but its real rise as an international metropolis began in the 19th century when it opened its ports. As a bridge for the intersection of Eastern and Western cultures, Shanghai has not only preserved the traditional Jiangnan water village style, such as Yu Garden and Shikumen Lanes, but also integrated the style of the Bund's European-style buildings and modern skyscrapers.

Economy and Development

As a window for China's reform and opening up, Shanghai has the world's busiest port and a highly developed economic system. The skyscrapers in Lujiazui, including the Shanghai Tower, Jinmao Tower and the World Financial Center, are symbols of its prosperity and modernization. At the same time, Shanghai is also committed to future urban planning for technological innovation and green development.
Tourism and Lifestyle
Shanghai attracts tourists from all over the world with its rich tourism resources and diverse culture. Whether it is the night view of the Huangpu River, the prosperity of Nanjing Road, or the artistic atmosphere of Tianzifang, tourists can feel the unique charm of this city. In addition, Shanghai's food, shopping and international lifestyle also add more appeal to it. As a city that combines tradition and modernity, Shanghai is not only a window to China, but also an important business card for the world to understand China.

Itinerary Day by Day

Day 1: All over the country - Shanghai - Check in hotel (airport/train station/port pick-up)

Hello! Welcome to China's largest city - Shanghai! Upon arrival, your guide will greet you at the airport arrival hall with a sign holding your name. Before you are transferred to your hotel, you can first experience the Shanghai Maglev Train (optional) - the world's first high-speed maglev train in operation, which can reach speeds of up to 300 km/h. The Shanghai Maglev Train began operation in 2003 and is the world's first commercial high-speed maglev line. It can reach a maximum speed of 430 km/h and travels from Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) to Longyang Road Station in just 8 minutes. Since the maglev train does not touch the track surface when running, passengers will hardly hear any noise and will not feel any bumps. The interior facilities are modern, clean and comfortable. (Note: The maglev train only runs between 06:45 am and 21:42 pm every day, and only runs between Pudong Airport and Longyang Road Station.)

Day 2: Shanghai City Tour (Breakfast/Lunch)

Today's Highlights: Shanghai Museum, Yu Garden, Shanghai World Financial Center, Nanjing Road, The Bund

After breakfast, visit the Shanghai Museum, one of the top museums in China. Located near People's Square, the museum is large and modern, with a main theme of ancient Chinese history and art. More than one million cultural relics are exhibited in the museum, including precious bronzes, paintings, calligraphy, ceramics, jades, sculptures, traditional furniture, seals, and ancient coins from more than 5,000 years ago to the Qing Dynasty. Among them, the Da Ke Ding (a bronze food container dating back more than 3,000 years) and the Jin Hou Su Chime Bells (ancient musical instruments) are the treasures of the town. Audio guide equipment will help you understand the background and knowledge of the exhibits more deeply.
Then go to the old city of Shanghai and visit Yu Garden (also known as "Yu Garden"), a famous Jiangnan classic garden that was originally built about 450 years ago. Walking through the garden, you can admire the quaint pavilions, exquisitely carved eaves, bizarre rockeries, koi swimming in the sparkling ponds, and many precious old trees. The asymmetrical design of the garden layout fully reflects the unique art and craftsmanship of Chinese architectural style, making people feel as if they are in the ancient life scene and feel the harmonious beauty between man and nature. Yuyuan Shopping Mall outside the garden is a good place to buy traditional Chinese handicrafts, artworks and taste various local specialties. Then, go to Lujiazui to visit the Shanghai World Financial Center (SWFC), the "Eye of Shanghai" and one of the iconic skyscrapers in Lujiazui, with a height of 492 meters (1,614 feet), second only to the nearby Shanghai Tower (632 meters/2,073 feet). Climb up to the 100th floor observation hall at a height of 474 meters, experience the thrill of the transparent glass walkway, and overlook the magnificent scenery of Shanghai, including the Bund, the adjacent Shanghai Tower, Jinmao Tower, and many surrounding attractions. At this moment, it seems that Shanghai is at your feet and the blue sky is within your reach.

Afterwards, head to Nanjing Road, the oldest commercial street in Shanghai and one of the most popular landmarks today. Stroll along the busy pedestrian street, where you will see many well-known brand stores, restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops and tall buildings. Then, continue walking to the Bund, the most iconic area in Shanghai. The Bund stretches 1.5 kilometers along the west bank of the Huangpu River. It was once a freight wharf in the late 19th century and later developed into the "Wall Street of the Far East". As a model of the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures, the Bund is famous for its 52 European-style buildings of various types and is known as the "International Architecture Expo". Take a pleasant walk here to admire these Western classical and modern-style buildings, as well as the Lujiazui skyscrapers across the river. At the end of the tour, take a bus back to the hotel. (Please inform your guide in advance if you want to have free time on the Bund or Nanjing Road, or choose to take a relaxing Huangpu River cruise (about 50 minutes) to enjoy the lights of Shanghai's main buildings and streets, or explore other places.)

Day 3: Shanghai Tour - Departure from Shanghai (Breakfast)

Today's Highlights: Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, Tianzifang

Are you curious about how Shanghai developed from a shabby fishing village to a modern, vibrant, international metropolis? This morning's tour will take you to the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall to fully answer this question and learn about Shanghai's ambitious future development plans.
The exhibition hall is a stylishly designed modern museum with the theme of "City, Citizens, Environment and Development". Photography, models and interactive multimedia displays make the visit lively and interesting.
The most worthwhile exhibits include precious old photos of landmarks such as the Bund, Nanjing Road, and Yu Garden during the International Concession period, as well as a large-scale city model showing the detailed layout of Shanghai.
Afterwards, go to Tianzifang, an art and handicraft tourist area transformed from a traditional residential area. This is a typical attraction to appreciate the preservation of local Shikumen buildings. In this lively place, you can leisurely stroll through the neat old alleys, observe the daily life of Shanghai locals, have a drink in an open-air cafe, or pick up interesting items in a chic shop, and feel the perfect fusion of international style and authentic Shanghai culture.
In the afternoon, your guide will escort you to the airport to catch your flight to your next destination or return home.
